VICTORIA JOHNSON

Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Princess

Artist Statement:

One of my favorite subjects to capture with my camera is most definitely Indigenous people. Through living on Alabama-Coushatta Tribal land in East Texas and traveling to Indigenous powwows, I have captured many faces wearing their beautiful beadwork and dance clothes. I took this photo at the Texas Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches, Texas back in June of 2021. The name of the dancer in the photo is America Janis. She has been the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Princess since June of 2020. She performed with other Alabama-Coushatta Tribal dancers at the festival that day. I captured her image as she was being introduced. I look forward to sharing more of my work of Indigenous people!
