INFUSIONS
I watched as you slept, your left hand
bent at the elbow, index finger
pointing west. Your right hand
wanted to point, too, but remained
on your chest under the newspaper
you had been reading.
Every now and then the pages moved
as your right thumb jiggled.
This happened as I was lying beside you
on a calm, rainy day reading poems,
a book of meditative releases
leaping from a spring,
lines oscillating
between myth and fact.
Though you sleep and I am awake
the whole needs only to steep,
strengthening the parts, choice infusions
deepening the color,
marking the well-curated way.
